In this ever changing world, there is always a competition in every field. To achieve something there should be a competition but a healthy competition only then our output will be the best. And of course there are always two who will stand out from the others from time to time.
When we take the web hosting industry, there are two service providers, both managed to reach the top of the web hosting fame. One is JustHost and the other is FatCow.
Both the companies provide special discounts so it is quite difficult to choose between these two, any ways let us see what makes them different.
History:
Both the companies are in the business since 1998 except that FatCow is green, of course in JustHost also there is a “Go Green” option where you can change your hosting to green in one click if you like.
Features and Benefits:
Features of JustHost and FatCow are similar. Both web hosts are hosting on a Linux web servers and have some common features such as
- 1 Free Domain Name – Domain Name is nothing but the name for your website which is also your web address.
- Unlimited Hosting and Transfer – You can have any number of hosting and transfer.
- Unlimited Mailboxes – You can have any number of mailboxes.
- PHP 4 & 5, Perl, CGI and SSI Support – PHP is a server side scripting language, especially suited for creating dynamic web pages and offers web developers a large section of instruments. PHP is currently the basis for many web applications and can be easily embedded in HTML code and connected to MySQL. PHP 4 is the first version powered by the Zend engine, which allows working with encoded files through the Zend Optimizer. While PHP 5 is known for its improved for its Object Oriented Programming, it builds its improvements on the foundations laid by PHP 4. Perl is a highly capable, feature rich programming language with over 22 years of development. It provides powerful text processing facilities without the arbitrary data length limits of many contemporary UNIX tools, it also facilitates easy manipulation of text files. Perl is very flexible. CGI Computer Generated Imagery is used for visual effects because computer generated effects are more controllable than other more physically based processes. SSI is a simple interpreted server side scripting language used most exclusively for the web; this is most frequently used to include the contents of one or more files into a web page on a web server.
- FTP Access – File Transfer Protocol is a standard network protocol which is used to copy a file from one host to another over an IP based network, such as Internet. This is built on a client –server architecture and utilizes separate control and date connections between the client and server applications which solves the problem of different end host configurations.FTP is used with user based password authentication or with anonymous user access.
- CRON Jobs – This automates the execution of scripts in certain schedule.
- Automated Script Installers – These automated script installers gives you and your users the ability to install and upgrade a growing collection of web applications at the click of a button.
Apart from the common features mentioned above, if you are going to run your website using Ruby on Rails and Python then you will have to go to JustHost, because FatCow does not provide offer to this programming language. Ruby on Rails – It is also known as Rails or RoR is an open source web application framework for the Ruby programming language. It is intended to be used with an Agile development methodology that is used by web developers for rapid development. Python – an interpreted, in interactive, object oriented extensible programming language which make our work more quickly and integrate the systems more effectively. You will have immediate gains in productivity and lower maintenance costs.
Apart from the technical side, when you look into the vouchers they provide, JustHost gives you more ad credits than FatCow.
Pricing:
When we go for pricing then you can get the JustHost Hosting for just $3.45/mo. where as in FatCow Hosting you need to pay $55/yr. so JustHost is much cheaper than FatCow. Both the hosting providers offer 50% discounts.
Control Panel:
The biggest difference between both web hosts lies in the control panel. JustHost uses the most popular control panel called cPanel. It has great interface which is very easy to use and it has plenty of features. JustHost also offers Fantastico Deluxe – a script installer that will automate the installation of popular web applications such as WrodPress, phpBB, Drupal and osCommerce among others. cPanel – a UNIX bases web hosting control panel that provides a graphical interface and automation tools designed to simplify the process of hosting a web site. It utilizes a 3 tier structure that provides functionality for administrators, resellers, and end user website owners to control the various aspects of website and server administration through a standard web browser. cPanel is designed to function either as a dedicated server or virtual private server.
On the other hand FatCow uses the control panel Plesk, which is also a good control panel but has fewer features when compared to cPanel. Like Fantastico Deluxe in JustHost, InstallCentral in FatCow basically does the same thing but it offer less application. Plesk – using the control panel you can use automate all tasks related to your web hosting business or your daily server. It is one of the most multi functional control panel.
Load Balancing Technology:
JustHost uses Load Balancing Technology for fastest response and in order to avoid any down time. Before we move, let us first learn what is Load Balancing Technology and then we will get an idea of how it is utilized in JustHost. In computer networking we call load balancing as a technique which is used to distribute workload evenly across two or any number of computers, network links, CPUs, hard drives, or the other resources so that we will get optimal resource utilization, it also maximizes the throughput and avoids overload. It increases reliability. This service is usually provided by dedicated program.
This is commonly used if the load is more on a server then the secondary server takes some load while the other is still processing requests. Hence you can conclude that as JustHost is using this technology you will not find any downtime as it provides more reliability.
FatCow also uses load balancers but with some other architecture so the reliability is not so high when compared to JustHost. So JustHost works best here also!!
Security in JustHost
Spam Protection: To protect your web mail from Spam then most of the web host solution is Spam Assassin. This is an automated filter that uses wide range of heuristic algorithms on mail headers and message body text to identify “SPAM”. This software eliminates almost 98% of all SPAM messages. Its performance depends on the individual configuration as we can tune it. Once the spam is identified then we can tag it as spam for later filtering.
CRON Jobs: This is a scheduled task which automates the execution of scripts which follows a given schedule; this is not only useful but also essential in some cases.
Password Protected Directories: As the name indicates we can have the password for directories which helps to store confidential information.
Hotlink Protect: If you find heavy traffic in your website all of a sudden which is never expected at that point of time and also your traffic quota is running out then your site may be the victim of hotlinking or bandwidth theft, by using the hotlink protect you are free from such disturbances.
Leech Protect: Leeching is nothing but it occurs when the users post their username and password publicly in the restricted area of your site. By using Leech Protect this problem can be handled by redirecting or potentially suspending the user.
Protection systems are available in FatCow also but that is not much effective when compared to JustHost. So you can conclude that you will have high protection in JustHost.
IP used in JustHost and FatCow
Dedicated IP in JustHost: In Dedicated IP a website has its own IP address, you can either type the URL or the numeric form of the IP address; both will bring the same domain.
Shared IP in FatCow: In Shared IP multiple websites share the same address. Here typing in the IP address will bring some kind of generic page instead of the specific site.
Servers used in JustHost and FatCow
Quad Processor Server: This type of server is used by JustHost which provides more virtual machine headroom with double the processing cores and double the memory capacity of previous generation. It has large memory footprints and scalability which provides the customers with greater productivity.
Apache Server: This type of server is used by FatCow which is considered to be the best and most stable servers which can be used in web hosting. Apart from its stability it is also easy to install, configure and maintain.
Both the servers works good but when we take the performance, JustHost server in performance wise serves best when compared to FatCow.
Conclusion:
Hence we can conclude by saying JustHost is better when compared to FatCow because it serves best in reliability, security, technology, pricing and many more. So if you are looking for a hosting provider which offers wide range of quality services then JustHost should be the perfect choice.
